ZRP goes digital

ZRP goes digital

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has embarked on a digitalisation drive that will see the computerisation of all its police stations and posts, police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi has said.

"We indeed want to move with the times," he said. "We are in the digital era and want to embrace technology, as such we have embarked on a digitalisation process that will see all police posts being computerised."

Chief Supt Nyathi was speaking to journalists during an election reporting workshop in Gweru last Friday.

He said lack of finances was stalling the process, which would not be completed before elections.

"The process started a long time ago, but it has been moving at a snail's pace due to lack of financial resources," he said. "It is now impossible that it will be done before elections.

"We want police to embrace technology and do away with writing of dockets using pens. We want them to use computers. Training in computers will be a major component of the process."

The digitalisation project, Chief Supt Nyathi said, was not an overnight process.

He said police had made significant strides in using social platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp.

"Despite the financial challenges that we are facing, we have come up with a Facebook page, WhatsApp platforms and Twitter accounts that the public can use as part of our ease of doing business," he said.

Chief Supt Nyathi said police details would be trained on the Electoral Act and other election-related statutes. He said police were committed to protecting Zimbabweans as evidenced by the setting up of an Election Commission led by Senior Assistant Inspector Erasmus Makodza.

"Police will be trained on the Electoral Act to ensure they protect every citizen without fear or favour and in line with our country's laws," said Chief Supt Nyathi.
