THE Zimbabwe Electricity Distribution Company (ZETDC)'s customers will from today be able to buy electricity tokens. This follows a short interruption of the system by the power utility for scheduled maintenance.

The power distribution firm had said in a notice: "ZETDC would like to advise its valued customers countrywide that the prepaid electricity vending system will not be available for service from Thursday, October 3 at 2230hrs to 0730hrs on Friday, October 4, 2019 to facilitate for scheduled maintenance works to improve service delivery.

"The scheduled maintenance is meant to address the challenges that customers have been experiencing to ensure efficient service delivery.

"Customers are advised to ensure that they buy adequate electricity that would sustain them during this maintenance period to avoid the inconvenience of running out of prepaid credit," the power utility said in a statement.

In the meantime, the power utility has been forced to cut power for about 16 hours daily due to low energy generation levels at Hwange and Kariba power stations. Zimbabwe is currently importing 400MW from South Africa's Eskom and 100MW from Mozambique's HCB.
